How Intense Is Your Procrastination?
Do you believe procrastination can significantly impact your personal and professional life? If your answer is "no" you obviously don't have an idea of how serious a problem procrastination can be. Answer the following questions carefully and honestly with a "yes" or "no":
  1. Are you likely to procrastinate for long periods of time?
  2. Are you able to finish all tasks assigned to you within the prescribed time frame without getting panicky?
  3. Do you find yourself working on the tasks assigned to you the night before the deadline and wishing that you started working on them sooner?
  4. Do you feel really stressed out about tasks assigned to you?
  5. Do you some times (or even regularly) underestimate how much time and effort a particular task would take?
  6. You don't feel guilty when you are out with friends when you could have been working on the task assigned to you?
  7. You rarely turn down an invitation to a social gathering even if you have to work on an assigned task?
  8. You seldom organize or plan your schedule?
  9. You sometimes or often find yourself saying that you will definitely work on it tomorrow?
  10. You are unable to sit at a desk and work on a task for less than an hour?
  11. Your social media usage can severely damage your ability to get your work done?
Did you answer yes to more than 5 or more questions? If so then there is a serious and immediate need for you to re-assess and re-evaluate your habits. You can do much better in life and you need to address this ugly habit of procrastination as a first step. Obviously, you need to adopt a new routine and modify your lifestyle so that you would be able to fight your procrastination more efficiently.

How Much Have You Been Procrastinating?
Let's do an evaluation. This can help you determine how much you are procrastinating. Ask yourself in what ways do you procrastinate? Think about all the forms of procrastination we have already mentioned. List them and tick them off as you compare yourself with the items on the list. Consider carefully if you are doing this yes or no.

And What Have You Missed/Lost?
After writing down the instances you have procrastinated, write down a list of goals that you failed to accomplish because of your procrastination. How much did you loose?  How much did it cost you in money, friends and/or opportunities? Would your life be different if you did it on time? Don't just think in terms of money; think about lost opportunities, promotions, friendships and trust.

Now if you have been honest about it, try to imagine what would your life be like 5 years from now if there is no procrastination and you do everything on time and give it your best.  How would your life be different?

You might now be asking: So what is the importance of knowing this? The importance is this:
  • You have now been honest with yourself about procrastination
  • You have identified the instances that you have been procrastinating
  • You have determined how serious/frequent your procrastination is
  • You have determined what you have missed or lost because of it.
This is crucial information. You now have a full picture of your procrastination and now you can get ready to tackle it head on.

You have now reached a crucial point. There are 2 major points here:
  1. You know what procrastination is doing to you. You know how this beast is destroying your self esteem, your finances, your relationships and your work.
  2. You also know how different your life can be if there is no procrastination.
Which Road Will You Choose?

Five years into the future, you might still be the same person who procrastinates at every turn, with little hope in your career. Those five years might end up just being another 5 years down the drain.

Or it could be THE 5 years of your life, the 5 years where you turned things around and made a success of your life.
