Management of Thought, Emotion & Time Review

Thinking may be viewed as a cognitive process characterized by the use of symbols as representations of objects or events. When we walk along the road, we do not necessarily engage in thought (although, of course, we may), but if we refer to walking that is not now going on, then we must use a symbolic reference. A symbol is anything that stands for or refers to something other than itself. The word "book' stands for printed pages with a firm cover - the object called book - but of course the symbol book is not the book. Such a symbolic reference characterizes thought. Thoughts can deal with remembered, absent or imagined objects, and events, as well as with those currently impinging on the sensory system.
